Job Summary

Position Summary:

The Summer Learning ARI Reading Specialist provides direct coaching and support to summer teachers to ensure literacy instruction aligns with the science of reading. The specialist helps implement evidence-based strategies and ensures targeted support for struggling readers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and advanced coursework or professional development in the science of reading, such as multisensory language instruction, or comparable alternative training approved by the Alabama State Board of Education
  • Two years of experience as a successful elementary or literacy teacher
  • Professional teacher certificate in the area of responsibility by the Alabama State Department of Education prior to starting date
  • Knowledge of scientifically based reading research, special expertise in quality reading instruction and intervention, dyslexia specific interventions, and data analysis
  • Fingerprint clearance with the Alabama State Department of Education prior to the start date

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the summer learning site supervisor to create a strategic plan for coaching to support and measure the impact of reading instruction according to the science of reading, school baseline data, and data from approved early reading assessment systems
  • Facilitate school wide professional development and measure the impact on instructional practice
  • Demonstrate effective science-based reading instruction for teachers that is clear, structured, and includes thorough explanations along with ample opportunities for guided practice, error correction, and feedback
  • Coach and mentor teachers daily via planned coaching cycles based on data and gradually releasing responsibility to teachers
  • Facilitate data analysis discussions and support teachers by using data to differentiate instruction according to the needs of students by adhering to the framework of tiered instruction
  • Support various aspects of teacher professional development, encompassing exceptional student education, content-area expertise, and data-driven instructional adjustments
  • Allocate time to activities and roles that have the highest impact on student reading achievement, such as classroom coaching and mentoring, supported by evidence from coaching logs, student impact data, and site visit observations
  • Monitor the reading progress of all students a minimum of three times per year
  • Assist teachers in modifying their instruction based on specific student needs identified through various data points, following the principles of reading science outlined in the coaching strategic plan
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administrators

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Basic understanding and knowledge of current technology. Strong knowledge base in the science of learning to read and the science of early childhood education

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee must also talk, hear, stand, and walk. The employee may be required to use their hands to finger, handle, feel, and/or reach. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
